In our family gift exchange, my sister Em gave me a gift certificate from Amazon. I always like books for Christmas. So this morning I went about selecting my Christmas gift. Amazon is such a great service. I found a list of the New York Times Book Review 10 Best Books. At the top of the list at #1 was "The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court (Hardcover) by Jeffrey Toobin."
I think that the Supreme Court will be a very interesting and current topic. I look forward to reading the book. Thank you Em.
When I buy from Amazon, I also like to look at other books purchased by folks when they buy the book I am buying. I selected a second book, "A Magnificent Catastrophe: The Tumultuous Election of 1800, America's First Presidential Campaign (Hardcover)" by Pulitzer Prize winner Edward Larson.
I was interested in understanding "The bitter infighting and the sophisticated political jockeying of 1800 spelled the end of any idea that America would be governed by enlightened consensus, resulting instead in the two-party system we know today."
I often lament to my siblings, who represent the entire political spectrum to the left of me (I am a conservative republican albeit a disheartened one) that partisan politics has yielded a 50% plus 1 vote mindset of domination of the other side instead of pursuing the best long term interests of the country.
