Conclusion: Android is better as a phone because of tie to Google services and iPhone better as a phone/music device. I also really like the free wireless tethering in android which costs $20 a month with an iPhone.
I was at the Tony Schwarz event last week and Tony asked me about the benefits of the Android operating system over the iPhone. Geir Freysson did a nice blog entry on it citing android's superior interface with Google's cloud. I agree with that. I use Google services for everything from standard gmail to Google Docs to Google Apps. There is great interface to contacts, email, calendar and maps. Over time, Android with its open development platform, will provide more applications.
The iPhone is locked in with ITunes so I would easily say, get an iPod for your music and let the Android be your phone!
I am a big Google Voice user and there is not an iPhone app for Google Voice. I love being able to press *4 and get a great (and legal) recording of a long call with a download link in the desktop app. I don't know why more people are not talking about Google Voice. It is fantastic.
I have a Nexus One Google phone which is unlocked and works on the ATT or Tmobile network and I like the simple way to put in a fresh battery. The latest iPhone battery goes just over 4 hours of heavy use and needs a screwdriver to put in a new battery. My two Nexus One batteries easily go 6 hours with the two batteries (in a four hour golf outing with GPS engaged, I make it about 3 hours before I put in the new battery).
iPhones are revolutionary techno-boom in the market between the fierce competition for mobile developers. Deep, with their technology challenges and work methods to provide various services are much better than any other competitor in the market. With its sleek, smart technology are lagging behind others with severe limitations in application development, developers of the iPhone.
